COUGHS, COLDS, and “THE FLU”

Despite the extremely hot temperatures of the summer months here in the Uptown area of Dallas, the “Cold and Flu” season is quickly approaching.  CityDoc wants to make sure that you are prepared for the “Cold and Flu” season by providing useful information on these illnesses, and by supplying hints that can help you decrease your likelihood of contracting them.

What is a Cold?
“Cold” is a term used to describe a combination of symptoms.  These may include cough, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, and occasionally fever.  Colds are usually caused by a virus, but not the Influenza Virus. Symptoms usually last for about 5 to 7 days.

How is this different from the Flu?
Although the symptoms of a cold and flu are very similar, symptoms of the flu tend to develop more quickly (1 to 4 days after exposure) and are typically more severe than the average cold.  They also tend to include high fever, chills, muscle aches, weakness, fatigue, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.  The flu is caused by the Influenza Virus.  Symptoms can last for up to 7 to 14 days.

Is there treatment for the Flu?
Yes! Although there is no current cure for the flu, there are several antiviral medications on the market that can help reduce the severity and duration of flu symptoms. These medications must be started within 48 hours (2 days) of onset of flu symptoms.  Consult with your CityDoc physician to see if you are a candidate for this medication.

Do I need antibiotics?
You will need antibiotics if you have a bacterial infection.  Antibiotics are not useful when treating a virus or viral illness.  Most common colds and “the Flu” are caused by a virus.  However, it is important to remember that colds and “the flu” can lead to other infections like sinusitis, ear infections, throat infections and pneumonia.  These types of infections can be caused by bacteria and may require antibiotic therapy.  Consult with your CityDoc physician if you feel you have any of these types of infections.

Do I need a Flu Shot?
As mentioned previously, there is no current cure for the flu. The only way that you can help prevent the flu is by getting immunized with an influenza vaccine each year.  This immunization is known at the “FLU SHOT” and it is available at CityDoc Uptown Urgent Care Center.  It is most effective if taken in October or November since the “Flu Season” typically lasts between late December and early March.

How do I keep from getting or spreading the Flu?
Other ways to prevent yourself from getting the flu include the following;

  • Wash hands thoroughly and frequently

  • Never pick up used tissues

  • Never share cups and eating utensils while you are ill

  • Stay home from work and school if you are ill with flu symptoms

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
